When looking at John and Nona´s marriage license and doing the math, they got married the day before John´s 18th birthday. Nona was only 16 and a few months. Therefore, John´s mother, Emily Ashley and Nona´s father, W.L. McIntosh both had to give written consent for them to get married.

1900 census
John and Nona are living in the Moreland Township of Scott County, Missouri. They have been married for 9 years. Nona has given birth to 4 children, but only 2 of them are still living: Coda (3) and Leslie (3 months). They own a farm and have a mortgage on it.

1910 census
The family has moved to the Kelso Township of Edna Village in Scott County. They have now been married 20 years and Nona has given birth to 7 children, but only 4 are living. Little Coady who was listed on the 1900 census passed away shortly after that census was taken. The four children listed on this census are William Leslie (15), Moses (6), Ethelina (4), and Hazel (2). They know own a house with a mortgage, instead of a farm. John is listed as a house carpenter. John registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918.

1920 census
Family has grown more and is still living in Kelso Township. However, that township is now located in Fornfelt City (which is known as Scott City today) in Scott County. They now have 6 children living with them: William Leslie (19), Moses (16), Ethel (14), Hazel (12), Frank (8), and Opal (5 months). John is now a capenter working for the railway. William Leslie is a laborer working in a box factory. They still have a mortgage on their house.

1930 census
John and Nona have now moved to the city of St. Louis. (St. Louis City is not located inside any county.) Not sure when they moved or how many of their children came with them. At the time the census was taken only the 3 youngest girls were still living with them: Ethel (24), Hazel (22), Opal (15). They are now renting a house for $30 a month. John is a carpenter contractor. Ethel and Hazel are both telephone operators working for the phone company. In a 1933 St. Louis phonebook listing, John, Nona, Ethel, and Hazel are all listed in the phone directory. They are living at 1915a East Grand Boulevard (now known as Grand Avenue).

1940 census
The family is still living in St. Louis city. John is now 67 and unable to work. Nona is 66. Ethel is 34 and still working as an operator for the phone company. It looks like they are now renting an apartment for $17.50 a month. In a 1940 St. Louis phonebook listing, John, Nona, and Ethel are listed as still living at the same place as in the 1933 phone directory. I still have not found any information about Hazel and Opal. I am assuming they must have gotten married, but I have not yet been able to find that information.

John´s obituary listed on page C4 of June 12, 1942 issue of St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
It is hard to read. Here is what it says:
UTNAGE, John - June 11, 1942, beloved husband of Nona Utnage, dear father of Leslie, Moses, Ethel Utnage, Mrs. Hazel Johnston, Mrs. Opal Calvin, and Frank Bixby, dear brother, grandfather, father-in-law.
Funeral from Edith E. Ambruster New Colonial Funeral Home, 4053 Lindell bl., Saturday, June 13, 1:30 pm.
